Powerball

Powerball is an American multi-state, exiting and multi-million-dollar jackpot game. This lottery game is a product of Multi-State Lottery Association and it is currently being offered in 46 different lottery jurisdictions. Powerball is America’s favorite lottery and it is available in 45 states, Puerto Rico, Washington DC and the US Virgin Islands. This is a clear indicator that it is an American game!

All members of Powerball lotteries make contributions made up of a percentage of their sales to create a pool from where jackpots are made. This grows to multi-millions. The game has the largest starting jackpot at $40 million. This decision was reached in January 15, 2012.

The biggest Powerball and third largest lottery globally was $600 million. This comes after two Mega Millions that took position one and two respectively.

Power Play

This is a great Powerball add-on feature that that makes it possible for players to win up to $2 million. Players may choose to add $1 every time they play Powerball in order to get a power play ticket. Any power play participant who matches the 5 numbers wins the $2 million prize. All the other prizes which are non-jackpot will have to be multiplied by the Power Play multiplier effect from 2 through 5.

There are nine price levels with lower 5 tier prices ranging from $4 million to $1 million with a maximum of $2 million in prices for Power Play.

The tickets in Powerball cost $2 per for each play. On the other hand, power Play costs $3 for each play. The Powerball jackpot is put in place by MUSL for every drawing and the calculations are done based on the amount of sales anticipated by the organization. This is also based on funds rolled from the previous drawings. Finally, the prevailing interest rates for the investments that are long-term too affect the draw. For each of the tickets sold, 31.97 per cent is dedicated towards the final top-prize pool.

History and background of Powerball

  • Lotto America

Lotto America is the predecessor of Powerball. Initially, this multi-state game was called Lotto America. The new name, Powerball, was adopted on April 19, 1992. After three days, the first draw for Powerball was held. Maine, as a state joined MUSL in 1990 and dropped out at the start of Powerball. It took several years until the summer of 2004 before rejoining again.

On October 13, 2009 MUSL consortium joined hands with Mega Millions to allow U.S. lotteries sell Powerball and Mega Millions. This expansion processes started on January 31, 2010. Powerball tickets were sold on 10 Mega Millions member lotteries. This ended the exclusivity clause. This is a great cross-selling expansion.

Most of the 45 lotteries in the US now offer both games. There are 50 states in the United States. There are five states that do not operate state-run lotteries because it is not supported by the state constitutional mandate or laws.

The Powerball became the first lottery game to use two drums. This strategy makes it possible to simultaneously allow high jackpot odds. This approach also creates numerous levels for prizes and reduces significantly the odds of winning. It explains why you can win by matching only one number. This great concept of two drums was suggested by Steve Caputo of Oregon Lottery and it gained a lot of popularity and as a result, it has been used by the EuroMillions, Eurojacket, and the Big Game in the United States.

Since the beginning of Lotto America in 1988, the Powerball drawings have been held in West Des Moines, Iowa. Mike Pace has been a longtime Iowa radio personality associated with the hosting of the drawings. Powerball is held in 45 states in the United States but the final draw is held at the Florida’s high tech studios in Tallahassee. Due to the need to promote the game’s expansion to new locations, some draws are held away from Florida.

The Powerball decided to take a new turn in 1996 when a total of five drawings were held away from its Des Moines home in Iowa. For the first time, the drawings were broadcast live from Atlanta during the Summer Olympics.

The Power Play was added as an optional multiplier to allow players to be able to multiply their non-jackpot winnings.

There is a general believe that the first $1 billion jackpot will take place by 2022. This would be a first in United States history. This will be made possible because if the jackpot is not won during a specific drawing, the prize pool is carried over to the next drawing period. This will continue accumulating until there is a winner. All the 45 states have different rules which are followed in regulating any unclaimed funds.

Puerto Rico is the first major Spanish speaking country that offers Powerball to her populace. The state joined Powerball on October, 2014. The Island does not offer Mega Millions for play.

In cases where the ticket sales fall below expectations, the game members will be forced to contribute the additional funds. This will be used to top the jackpot pool shortage. This is more likely to happen when the jackpot is won on consecutive drawings.

Lisa played the Powerball game when she accompanied her husband to pick spices and the Black Friday newspaper that carries ads. While in the checkout pointed Lisa and her husband started debating whether they will buy some lottery tickets for their kids. They thought this was a great way to tuck in their Christmas stockings. Lisa bought two Powerball tickets even though they decided against the stocking stuffers. The two tickers were one for herself and the remaining for her husband.

Lisa reported that she had never bought the Powerball tickets before. Her decision was influenced by the cashier when she asked her whether she wanted to buy the Powerball tickets.

Lisa and her husband returned home and then posted the Powerball tickets on the refrigerator. Lisa checked on the number on a Sunday night and found that she had won. She yelled to her family to join her in celebration. At first they all thought that she was mad at something. Her daughter asked whether this was an emergency and she said yes.

Lisa was unable to sleep that night. Despite that eventuality, she woke up the following day and headed to work as usual. As a family they have been thinking about it and they have decided to retire. She said that it took her a few days to realize that she does not need to get up every morning for work.

Lisa puts her family a head of all her plans. She plans to clear student loans. Just like most families they have repairs to make and loans to pay. They also may decide to buy a house for one of their kids. She also added that she had identified a Subaru Forester that she will buy so that she can travel more frequently.

Lisa has been a Washington’s Lottery Scratch player for a long time. This win is the first major win in her life. Lisa and her family are yet to decide whether to choose the annuity made up of 30 payments or the cash option where she will receive $56,818,182.
